SEVENTEEN

SEEDS OF EVIL

The wind whipped through the enormous gash in the Revocater’s hull, buffeting Hudson and forcing him to shield his eyes and grab hold of the deck for support. Then another focused column of energy lashed through the leviathan, but this time Hudson could see the weapon’s origin. It was a Seed Ship – a diamond-shaped servant of Goliath that rivaled CET military warships in size. The alien vessel was aiming the tip of its arrowhead body at the Revocater, and using its cutting beam as a scalpel. A wide cross-section of the Revocater had been cut through, so that Hudson could see across almost the entire length of the secret research facility. It was like looking at the layers of a cake after a slice had been removed.

“It’s Goliath, it must have found out that Morphus is here!” Hudson called out, needing to shout in order to be heard over the wailing wind, blaring sirens and sparkle of the Seed Ship’s cutting beam. “We have to get clear, before it realizes we have her.”

“You’re not going anywhere!”

Captain-General Sharpe was on his feet, one hand clamped around the door jamb for support, while the other aimed a pistol at Hudson and Tory.

“This is your doing, once again!” Sharpe roared. “Your meddling has brought the monster to our door!”

Suddenly, a ripple of sparks cascaded across the side of the Seed Ship, and an RGF Patrol Craft raced overhead, cannon whirring. The Seed Ship turned and fired, obliterating the RGF craft with a single, precisely-aimed shot. Moments later, explosions lit up the alien vessel from above, and Hudson saw a CET Frigate dropping from orbit, bombarding the Seed Ship with its cannons. The Seed Ship angled its diamond shaped tip toward the frigate and fired, punching a hole through its aft quarter, and causing the CET vessel to spiral out of control.

“Take cover!” Hudson called out, throwing himself to the deck.

The frigate hammered into the hull of the Revocater, rebounding off it like a pebble skipping across the surface of a calm lake, before crashing into the sandy soil of Caccini Two in an inferno of flames.

The collision with the frigate sent violent shockwaves through the Revocater, and Tory was forced to let go of the alien blade she’d pulled from the wall in order to steady herself. The weapon rattled across the deck, along with the table, chairs and bodies of the unconscious CET guards. Suddenly, the hexagonal cube rolled past and Hudson dove for it, like a soccer goalkeeper trying to save a goal. His left hand managed to grab the object, and he hurriedly shoved it into a pouch and secured the clasp tightly.

“I have Morphus,” said Hudson, but his partner was focused on other matters.

Over by the door, General Sharpe had been thrown to the deck by the force of the quakes. The officer quickly regained his footing, but Tory had already seized her opportunity and pounced, rushing the General and kicking the pistol out of his grip.
